I do not think that Randal Patrick McMurphy is insane like the rest of the people are in the film. Most of the people clearly have mental problems/ conditions that affect them. I don’t think that Randal has anything wrong with him. I think he has total control of his actions. I think the reason he was brought into the “Cuckoo Nest” was because he faked insanity to avoid something. The doctor in this also believes in this. I also think that Randal is really kind on the inside but can act out at times. An example of this is when he started making racist sounds to the Crazy Native American guy. He also had sex with a 15 year old, which is just awful for a grown man to de. He also has many assaults witch lead to many arrests. He could be acting crazy because he didn’t want to go to jail. “I just fight and Fuck too much”. He said this when the doctor asked him why he thinks he is at the Cuckoo’s nest. A motif from the story is medication. All of the people in the mental institution have to take medication including Randall. Randall however doesn’t swallow the pill. Randall also really loves baseball. Randall also try’s to teach the other inmates how to play basketball and how to play poker even though he gets really pissed off when they don’t follow the rules or ask too many questions. Randal has many conflicts with Nurse Ratchet. The first conflict is when 9/17 people voted to switch the schedule around and she did not change the schedule so they could watch baseball. This leads to Randall wanting to break out of the “Cuckoo Nest”. The other conflict is when he doesn’t want to eat the medicine. The nurse did not answer the question of what pill she was giving him so Randall didn’t want to eat it, which is understandable. When he protested, the nurse said he could have the medicine injected into him anally so then he decided to take the pills orally. But, he his the pills and then spat them out. Music is another motif. An example of this is when they play the music over the loud speaker and they didn’t turn it down when Randall asked. The nurse said it was all of what the older men had that were in the war. The glass in the nurse’s station is another motif. I think the glass separates the sane from the insane people. The only person in the “Cuckoo Nest” that went inside the glass was Randall. Laugher is another motif in the movie. Smoking is another motif. I think smoking is a motif for relaxing under the stress. I think baseball is a motif for freedom. They imamates cannot watch baseball because they don’t have free
