What does insanity mean?

In the movie, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” the setting is an insane asylum in which the characters: Randall Patrick McMurphy, Nurse Ratchet, Harding, Billy Bibbit, Chief Broom, and others all are completely insane. However, when Randall is conversing with Doctor Spidey, it seems that not only is Randall not crazy, but he is also just the slightest bit intelligent. The rest of characters are perhaps more borderline if anyone was even questioning whether or not they are psychotic or not. Billy of course has a stuttering problem, but besides that, it seems that he is not truly normal, but normal enough. Nurse Ratchet is a nurse and therefore could not possibly be irrational physically or mentally. The remaining characters are clearly deranged because they do not speak right and they certainly do not act right either.
The question above is, “What does it mean to be insane?” The definition of insane is, “In a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behavior, or social interaction.”( "Insane Definition - Google Search." Insane Definition - Google Search. N.p., n.d. Web. 11 Dec. 2014.) This definition well describes but does not fully cover the extent at which this word can used. Insanity in the eyes of person who is already insane is being normal. In the eyes of a person who has trouble understanding the world and yet is not considered to be insane sees it as confusing. And lastly, a “normal” person who tries and follows all the rules and all the laws and is a good citizen sees it as abnormal, or essentially, not right. Overall, insanity can be viewed as something good, something that is needed, or something that has no use and should never be accepted into our local communities.
