When someone is insane or crazy it means they are senseless or nothing makes sense to them. The person who is insane can’t comprehend ideas and thoughts as well as others. They have odd motifs that are common throughout all insane people. Some of those common characteristics are that they seem to laugh a lot, sometimes at others but mostly at their own thoughts. They are also quiet for long amounts of time and act like they can’t trust anybody and that everyone else has power over them. Smoking and gambling are also two common actions that are found in insane people because that is what they seem to find fun. Insane people enjoy listening to quiet peaceful music to calm them down because people like this often have a tendency to “snap” and have quick and random mood swings. Insanity goes hand and hand with imagination. Insane people see things that others can’t. They picture things that make them happy and then this “thing” will sometimes turn on them and scare them, such as the disease, Schizophrenia. In this movie "One Flew Over the Coo-coos Nest” the nurses take control over these patients and control them by telling them what they can’t do or where they can’t go or when they can’t do something. In my opinion, in this movie, Randall Patrick Murphy, i believe actually isn’t insane and doesn’t belong in this asylum. Most insane people are very similar but he isn’t like everyone else. He is loud, likes to break the rules and do what others can’t. He yells and makes our noises like any normal person. He breaks the rules like trying to tell the nurses he didn’t want to take his medicine and then fooled them into thinking he did. Also, he went into the nurses office, a place where no patients are allowed, only nurses. Then he tries to do what others can’t he tells the nurses to change the schedule so then they can watch the world series. He tries lifting the marble sink up from the ground even when everyone said he couldn’t. Lastly, he laughs at everyone, nobody else laughs at each other but he does because i think that he thinks that he shouldn’t really be there. Ultimately, at this point in the movie, Murphy doesn’t seem insane. Unlike the others, things make sense to him, he knows how to play card games, he knows that he wants to watch the world series, he knows how to get into the nurses office because he was able to figure it out on his own.
The definition of insane is to be in a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behavior, or social interaction; seriously mentally ill. In the Cuckoo Nest, there are many examples of insanity through the characters. Insanity can easily be seen through the characters Cheswick, Billy Bibbitt, and chief Bromden. Cheswick is obviously mentally unstable and cannot control his feelings. It is apparent because he is always crying when he feels nervous or is put into a tough situation. The nurses and his friends have to avoid scolding him to keep him from becoming upset. Billy Bibbitt has trouble communicating with others because of his stutter and is socially awkward. Chief Bromden is supposedly deaf and does not talk or communicate with the people around him. He stays isolated and fails to express feeling or emotion. By my definition of insane, I do not find any of these characters to be out of hand. Just because someone has trouble communicating, does not express the way they feel, or have trouble keeping their emotions in tact, does not mean they are insane. I think the characters may need to visit a therapist for help instead of the insane asylum they are in. I do think that if one of them has committed some sort of crime or has done a bad thing, then they deserve to be in this asylum in order to be controlled in as non-prison like environment. Randall Patrick Mcmurphy is the main character throughout the movie. He can communicate well, control himself and his emotions, and expresses his feelings. I don’t think he is crazy or insane at all. He has the ability to control himself and live a normal life. Evidence of this is when he wants to watch the World Series on TV. No other person in the asylum with him has this interest because they can’t function or think the way he does. They are always too worried about their lives, but RPM can function like a normal human being. Another example of RPM thinking he is normal is when he walks straight into the nurses’ office to retrieve something. He sees nothing wrong with what he is doing because he is normal, just like everyone else outside of where he is. Being insane is having a serious problem controlling yourself and committing a crime or bad deed to prove your insanity. Just doing something wrong does not make you insane, it is the uncontrollable urge to do it more than once and not know how to control your emotions, actions, and ways of communicating. RPM is normal in my eyes, which is why he establishes himself as the sort of “leader” when he walks into the asylum.
